Solar Energy Stocks

solar_panel.gifFor the last six months, solar stocks have been moving up and down like crazy. Here’s the a watchlist for solar energy stocks. The straight up solar plays are ESLR, SPIR, ENER, and DSTI. These are companys that specialize heavily in the industry.

CY is primarily a semiconductor company, but they have a solar power branch called Sun Power. GE bought out AstroPower awhile ago, so they have stuff going on too. Also on the watchlist is KYO, another diversified solar play.

The high price of solar panels is the reason that the solar industry is being held down. Polysilicon, one of the main components in solar panels, is expensive. In fact, the price of polysilicon has been increasing this year due to shortages. So, solar will never be able to become a key player in energy until either oil becomes as expensive as solar, or if solar companies can design a panel that doesn’t require polysilicon.

If there exists an innovative company that is working on getting around this polysilicon price bottleneck, please let me know!!
