Nike Sacks Saga Sports

Nike, a US multinational, is sacking the Pakistani company Saga Sports, its main manufacturer of hand?stitched balls due to the concerns about “significant labour compliance violations”. Nike, the official supplier of Premiership league, admitted on November 20 that some of the balls used in the Premiership matches might have been stitched by children in their homes.

A six-month investigation conducted by Nike concluded that Saga was outsourcing many of the balls to casual workers who sew them together in their homes around the city of Sialkot. Nike’s chief executive, Mr Mark Parker, said that the factory has persistently broken its commitments and breached its trust with Nike forever.

“If you have production in homes, it’s very difficult to monitor safe labour conditions,” said a Nike spokesman. “There’s also the potential for underage labour, which we do not condone.”

Nike is supplying balls for the UK Premiership since 2000. The company paid the league close to Ł10 million for a three-year deal and wrested the prestigious contract from Mitre. Sacking of Saga will mean a shortage of balls for the near future as Nike speeds up to switch production to factories in China.

Nike informed the Premier League about the decision in advance. A league spokesman said that they could only support Nike in taking action where they had found the standards of labour been violated.

In the late 1990s, a series of disclosures about child labour at factories around Sialkot impelled sportswear companies to tighten their monitoring in the area. Nike has since been praised by charities for cleaning up its act.

“We’ve been working very closely with Nike to ensure the rights and conditions of people working in these factories are fair and of an acceptable standard,” an Oxfam senior policy adviser, Mr Samar Verma said. According to him, the Nike’s decision to sack Saga Sports is a very positive step in the right direction.

To Whom It May Concern,

It might be true that Saga Sports violated the child labour act. Saga Sports is the biggest supplier of soccer balls and it is the only 14001 certified company in Sialkot, Pakistan, providing maximum benefits to the employers and customers. There is some controversy going on which I say is the bad patch for Saga Sports and it will soon boost and Nike will never achieve this position again. I still remember that day when Mr. Khurshid (Late) attended the board meeting before leaving for the contract agreement where they decided to go with “Adidas”. But Mr. Khurshid decided to go with “Nike” because his vision was stabilize the “Nike” brand which is still far away from “Adidas”. It is very unfortunate for “Nike” that it plans for shifting the production from the main hub to China and it will be the end of “Nike” and the rise of “Mitre” or any one of them. I would like to say that “Mirrors always lie and only real pictures show the truth”.

Highups of NIKE this might be true that saga does fullfill their obligations regarding Corporate social responsibilities. But sacking them is blunder because they are providing jobs to 5000 to 6000 people. Moreover conditions are not so ideal in other manufacturing units serving other brands.

“Mirrors always lie and only real pictures show the truth”. yes Mr. Zeeshan is very right to say. I myself have been in Saga Sports and especialy participated in HR and Matters related to social complaince. The truth is that Nobody in Sialkot is working according to such requirement that Nike is being demanded. I am to say most of them is not giving to their workers even minimum wages, Social Security and EOBI even. But it was Saga who was providng its workers all legal facilities plus absolutely free transport, lunch, full medical, a very strong labour union and much more., Saga’s Stitching centers have facilities much better than Head Offices of other production units like Five Star ( A unit who is working for Nike now) But at the end i would like to pin point the reality and that is Nike acted accoring to the propoganda against Saga Sports.

hi i am bilal , sialkot. i was one of the material providers to Saga Sports and i studied, why was the Saga and Nike contract comes to end. It was only Nike, who demolished the contract because there is no reality of child labour or any other problems for employees. There was only mis-management in Saga Sports, which results for ending of contract.

Mr Soofi was a great person. And its really a hard time for his family. They should be totally supported by the people of Sialkot. As far as Nike is concerned, they finished their contract with Saga because they could get cheaper machine stitched balls from China.Saga was a great company, and it rised the name of Sialkot. We should support his family.Mr Soofi did so much for Sialkot and for the people of sialkot.

It’s really promising to see such remarks on Mr Khurshid Ahmed Soofi and his efforts. He is the legend and his efforts were obvious to every single person globally. This relationship between Nike and Saga was like an honest bond which was knotted by Mr Soofi but the only tradegy everyone faced was his loss. Let us fall back in his history, where Mr Soofi started his first order from 50 balls and broke up to 50,000 balls. The mastermind built up the most amazing infrastructure anyone could ever imagine. This was a new concept in SIalkot. He placed the best of all. Nike was only and only introduced by him. But since this bond of Nike and Saga has been ended, Sagar sports is the only one suffering. Yes, who says there was no mis management. But the only chance given for that was by Nike. Nike made an irrlevant points to be considered even by the government which was thankfully all resolved. I have myself seen 20 pages of complaints not only in the favour of labour, it was indeed about some really stupid points,le. the trolley’s were not placed in the position, why doesn’t the labour keeps a line while they’re standing for the food to be served in the mess, and so on. They don’t make any sense to us. Nike is a multinational company and it has its own rules and policies but could that company rule the policies of Saga? No, because our nation has a different view. They’ve skilled labour who have the ability to deal by themselves where as Saga sports labour was unskilled. According to me childlabour issue is a big bullshit because they could not get a cheaper price for the handstiched balls. Technically it was like a circle which revolved and now saga is facing every single problem. Saga has lost its other good name brands as well like Puma, Mikasa, uhl sports and more.. It’s hard to believe that decision’s were taken in a wrong suspect but believing on the fact when you don’t have business, how will you manage your expenses. Nike badly pointed in Media about saga sports which was a bad impact on the company and other costumers. When Nike themselve mentioned in every single point that they’re no more interested working in Pakistan, how come they jumped into the same field and started working with Silver Star. The only reason behind this was that, Nike went to CHina n offered 5,00,0000 balls order which they were unable to accept and implement. And nike decided to distribute orders in pakistand to 5 companies and by the time Saga sports was already in a slump position so was unable to apply for the tender.
There was a survival point for saga but as the policies say, Retrenchment process was to be held. Saga sports suffered because of this word called LABOUR. Honestly, there’s nothing left in the company except for its own structure and Mr Soofi’s great achivements of trophy’s and awards. Can you imagine of the point where his family is standing? Mrs Soofi who has been so kind to her labour, her employees, her relatives and everyone around. Do you have the realisation of how it feels when you loose the person who leads your home, your life, your kids and everything. It’s completely understandable to sensible people im sure that what kind of difficulties they’re facing. The current updates are very much dishearting after looking on the charts of how saga built up and what has happened to it. The company is a big problem now due to all this bullshit. People in Sialkot city have their best efforts to make it more worse and Vanish the name of Saga Sports so called Mr Soofi’s name. Yes they’re competitors but besides that more of to jealousy. Wonder why people have such derogatory comments for this company now, where this Sialkot community wished to visit atleast once in a year and the biggest wish of being friends with Mr Soofi. I would advise people just to pray for Mr Soofi’s family, his daughters and his wife who are still surviving and facing everything. The company itself has a believe and God is so keen to throw his blessings on them, Hopefully they’ll get over with their issues when Allah knows they were never created by them. This company will be on a revival process hopefully. I would advise to pray for this name to be alive.
I am remarking on this where as i am the most closest person to Mr Soofi and Saga sports, and all what i said is an honest truth. Mr Soofi is the Saga sports, he is still alive in our hearts with his effort of Saga sports, Please pray for this name.
