The North Face

thenorthface.gifI wish The North Face were a publicly traded stock. If you live in a moderately cold area like the SF Bay Area, you'll see that everyone and their mom has a North Face jacket. I also talked to a salesrep at REI and she mentioned that North Face stuff has been flying off the shelves for the last few months. The jackets are high quality, but they come with a very high pricetag. I wouldn't be surprised if they're pulling in massive profit margins on every sale.

When did their stuff suddenly become so popular?! Any ideas on how to cash in on their success?

UPDATE: It looks like The North Face is owned by VF Corp (VFC). Cramer did an interview with the CEO of VFC and you can watch the video clip here (thanks noomerikal for the link). It sure was a North Face Christmas.

Unless my mind is going, I’m fairly sure it’s owned by VFC. Granted, they own a lot, so buying that stock might not capture as much as you’re hoping for. Maybe there will be a sweatshop IPO in the future (imagine the lawsuits), but I doubt it.

Maybe try their “technology partners”?

Hmm…quick search indicates they use PXR tags, MANH for supply chain, IBM for IT, and T for voice. No idea if any of that is outdated.

Good luck finding something you like.

TNF has had a storied history of mismanagement. I actually worked their for a stretch and they had notorious supply chain managment issues. They enjoy a strong brand name but as a retail play there are more solid options out there.

People ask the same question about Trump International. But what is comes down to (wizetrade aside) is…when you have a publicly trading company, you have to have a board of advisors. Typically about 10-20. They CFO’s power then becomes lessened. He can actually even be fired. I live in Dallas, Texas and North Face is even big here. Even though we don’t get above 40 degrees. But in the words of Trump; “I won’t take my company public, because I don’t want to get fired.”
